So, I got this wild hair the other day to try and remake the Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119R-001. You know, that classic style watch that just screams “old money”? Yeah, that one. I’ve always had a thing for those kinds of watches – they just look so darn classy. I saw this beauty in one of those fancy-pants watch stores, and I just couldn’t get it out of my head. It was shining like a diamond. I thought, “Why not give it a shot?”
I started by just staring at pictures of the watch online. I mean, really staring. Like, I practically memorized every little detail. The hands, the numbers, the way the light hits the case… everything. I wanted to make sure I had a good mental picture before I even started sketching.
Drawing It Out
Next, I grabbed my sketchbook and started drawing. Lots and lots of rough sketches. Getting the proportions right was a real pain, I gotta tell ya. The curves, the angles, it all had to be just so. It took a while, but eventually, I had something that looked like a decent blueprint.
Making a rough shape
- After that, I moved on to making a rough shape out of some scrap metal I had lying around. It was just a basic outline, nothing fancy. But it helped me get a feel for the size and weight of the watch. I even cut out some paper circles to play around with different sizes and see what felt right on my wrist.
Making the Details
Now came the really hard part – making all those tiny details. This is where things got messy. I tried a bunch of different techniques, some worked, some were a total disaster. I won’t bore you with all the failed attempts, but let’s just say there were a lot of them. I experimented with different types of paint, trying to get that perfect color and texture. It wasn’t easy, folks.
Finally, after weeks of trial and error, I had something that looked pretty darn close to the real deal. It wasn’t perfect, mind you, but it was close enough for me. I put it all together, and you know what? It actually looked like a watch! I slapped a cheap strap on it, just to see how it looked on my wrist, and I gotta say, I was pretty proud of myself.
It’s not a real Patek Philippe, of course, but it’s a pretty good imitation, if I do say so myself. And you know what? I learned a lot from the whole experience. It was tough, frustrating at times, but also really rewarding. Would I do it again? Maybe. But next time, I might pick a watch that’s a little less complicated!
